GE's 53-foot Mobile Solutions Center back on the road after a hi-tech upgrade

NASHVILLE, TENN., MAY 1, 2006 -- The bright blue, custom 53-foot drop deck trailer known as the GE Mobile Solutions Center has returned to the open road this month following the installation of a new interior design and new, hands-on technology exhibits. The changes will help GE's Trailer Fleet Services business continue to bring the latest in trailer tracking technology direct to customers' doorsteps.

"The Mobile Solutions Center has provided both a comfortable and educational environment in which to talk to customers about the benefits of our trailer tracking product, VeriWise Asset Intelligence," said Bob Williams, senior vice president of North American sales for GE's Trailer Fleet Services business. "These latest upgrades will help customers stay current as telematics technology evolves."

During 2005, the GE Mobile Solution Center traveled 70,000 miles across the U.S. and Canada, racking up 143 events, 80 customer sites, 13 trade shows, and 41 branch visits. The pace is continuing this year, and in fact some customers have asked for repeat visits to learn more about the latest technology.

A new section inside the Mobile Solution Center is GE's "Look into the Future" section, which consists of two interactive kiosks at which customers can learn about RFID technology and how a tire pressure sensor works. These exhibits were assembled by telematics scientists at GE's Global Research Center's Pervasive Decisioning team.

The upgrade work was performed by Philadelphia-based The Borden Agency, a custom trailer outfitting firm.

First introduced by GE in April 2003, VeriWise consists of a fully protected, trailer-mounted transceiver, a discreet antenna, and a patented power management system. The system uses the Orbcomm low earth orbit satellite network and is supported by the Asset Intelligence business with advanced research and engineering resources from GE's four global research centers. VeriWise options include an interior-mounted cargo sensor and a solar trickle charging system to extend battery life.

Trucking companies are using GE's trailer monitoring technology to increase security as well as efficiency. VeriWise customers can avoid losing trailers, locate stolen trailers and the cargo they contain, or to detect and prevent unauthorized transport by "dropped" trailers in between loads-all situations that drive up operating costs for shippers and ultimately consumers.
